Compiled by Customs Inform,
Hake Imports to Russia Jan – Oct 2014 provides a ranking of Russia's
top 60 hake importers, and of the top exporters, for the period.
Coming amid Russia's Aug. 7 ban on western food imports, the data reveals Russia's hake imports initially remained remarkably steady after the ban, remaining stable in August and dropping by "just" a third in September.
However, they then took a bigger dip in October, when they more than halved compared to the same period last year.
The main factors offsetting the sanctions have been strong increases in volumes, especially from China and Ecuador, which have helped fill the gap in supply caused by the lost access from Russia's two biggest suppliers, the US and Canada.
China has more than doubled its hake sales to Russia year-on-year since the ban, making it the third biggest exporter of hake to the country so far this year, compared to sixth largest last year.
Ecuador has seen an even bigger increase and has jumped from fifth to second place.
Sales from Argentina have also risen since the ban, more so in October when they more than doubled year-on-year. From Peru, after initially showing no impact from the ban, sales also showed a sharp increase in October, jumping by 69%.
